Dr. Davina A. Moss
Pregnant women who use illegal substances during pregnancy are stigmatized.
These women lack resources and / or the space to obtain the support needed to cope with life's challenges that are barriers during the pregnancy. Many are ashamed to admit that there is use of substances or alcohol during pregnancy for fear of negative treatment by providers during their prenatal and postpartum care. The providers can take the lead to opening conversations and allowing the pregnant patient to disccuss the challenges and barriers they experience surrounding substance use. In order for the providers to open conversations, there must be self-exploration of biases and personal opinions and stigmas that result in disenfranchisment of the pregnant woman.
